20250812 - Educational institutions...
I have been tinkering with and using AI for a while now.
I have used it for coding, documentation, spreadsheets, market /stock analysis, asking all kinds of information about facts, processes, events, generating questions and scenarios, etc . Pretty much in almost everything. I have not come back empty handed yet and it is getting better every day... Sure, some things might be incorrect or made up. It can be spotted after a while.
I have recently got promotional access to a pro version of an AI tool and it is even better than I imagined (duh!)
There will be none (actually, there are none already) reasons to go to a school or college for getting information about anything.
Sure, information doesn't give us logic, reasoning and understanding how and why that information was arrived at and why things are that way. It needs something more.
There are tons and tons of free content on YouTube and a zillion other online education services as well. Anything you want, you can find it online somewhere. Paid services will give more as well.
AI is like having a full time 24x7 personal tutor for almost anything.
Of course, it is useful only after a particular age (like 16~18y maybe I think), when children more or less figure out how to find things online and how to get to understand what they are looking for in the first place...
Prior to that age, they need more activities and engage with many other very important things (which are unfortunately considered "extra curricular" activities generally in most institutions).
So , what will be the use of schools/colleges? Will they be needed at all in the future after that age (16~18y)?
My thinking (and I could be magnificently wrong here), is that we probably won't need institutions for learning information sort of things.
But schools and colleges do other things for children growing up. They provide a place to make friends, socialize with others, interact with other like minded folks, take part in sports and competitions, etc.
Children also need some "person" to interact with who can empathise with them and patiently provide guidance if they are not understanding something.
Besides, they need guidance and help initially to learn how to interact with the AI tools to get the most out of them.
My opinion/ thinking is that (maybe after that age). They will need an institution to
- Belong somewhere
- Get qualified guidance on AI usage
- Have available mentors (not teachers), who will help clarify doubts and concepts if someone was not able to get it online
- Labs which they can do practical things and tinker with things
- And, more importantly , have opportunities to engage in
- sports and games clubs
- music clubs
- art clubs
- hand/ physical activities (like woodworking, metal working, etc., etc.)
- drama
- debate
- any number of such clubs the institution can offer
There needs to be no restriction on a "stream" of education to pursue.
Students can pursue the subjects they are interested in and sign up with the mentor for that subject offered by the institution.
Each subject will probably have a prerequisite and that will automatically decide a "stream" once they start getting deeper into a particular subject area.
There won't be a need for colleges/ schools in the traditional sense - after an age for children I feel...
What do you think?
